2025 Harvest Moon Festival Update
Misty Velichka and Amanda Condrotte, Co-Chairs of the Harvest Moon Committee, provided an update to Council regarding plans for the 2025 Harvest Festival scheduled for September 13, 2025. They announced plans to expand the event to two days by introducing an outdoor family-friendly cinema on Friday night. They also mentioned the inclusion of a Lego Competition and are exploring the possibility of including midway rides on Friday and Saturday. The committee intends to submit a formal request for Council’s consideration to approve the closure of Main Street (from the Krooked House to the Catholic Church) starting at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, September 12th, to facilitate the setup for earlier events. With this early setup, Saturday's events will commence earlier than the usual 3:00 p.m. start time. The committee will provide a formal letter outlining these requests for Council's consideration.
2025 Business and Hiring Expo
Council discussed plans for the Grimshaw and District Chamber of Commerce 2025 Business Expo and Hiring Fair. The Town of Grimshaw will have a booth at the Expo, and Council members will be in attendance to engage with residents and visitors. Plans for the new Kennedy Park will be on display, and residents will be invited to share their vision of how Grimshaw’s 100th birthday could be celebrated. The event takes place on March 21st from 1-8 pm at the Mile Zero Regional Multiplex in the Atrium and Theatre.
2025 Paving Project
Council approved that EGIS Canada Ltd. tender the paving project for 47A Street on behalf of the Town of Grimshaw, subject to the availability of funding.
Alberta Pond Hockey Championships
Councillor Lynn Florence, a member of the 2025 Alberta Pond Hockey Planning Committee, provided an update to Council regarding the Alberta Pond Hockey event scheduled for March 7-9, 2025, at Lac Cardinal Lake. This annual event features competitions in hockey, stick curling, and ringette. New this year, fireworks are planned for Saturday night at 7:30 PM, taking place near the Multiplex ball diamonds before the Gala. The Town of Grimshaw is proud to be a municipal partner in this event, contributing a sponsorship of $5,000 along with various gifts in kind. Deputy Mayor Stacey Messner will deliver opening greetings, while Mayor Wendy Wald will provide closing remarks. Registration for the sporting events is currently open, and tickets for the Gala can be purchased at albertapondhockey.com, Beyond 2000, or at the Multiplex. Letter of Support for Forest Resource Improvement Grant
Council approved writing a letter of support for Northern Sunrise County’s grant application to the Forest Resource Improvement Association Alberta (FRIAA). If approved, the grant funding would support and provide training for municipal staff, firefighters, emergency personnel, and other responders from Grimshaw and surrounding municipalities as a part of the Peace Regional Emergency Management Partnership. The training would ensure the region is better equipped to respond to wildfires or other emergencies. Training would include a mock disaster exercise.
Long Lake Regional Waste Management
Council reviewed the Long Lake Regional Waste Management Services Commission 2025 Requisition totaling $232,528.90. The Town of Grimshaw, along with other neighbouring municipalities, provides funding to Long Lake Regional Waste Management Services for the Regional Landfill, Grimshaw Transfer Station, and Waste Management for residents. Council moved that the amount be included in the Town of Grimshaw’s 2025 budget.
Access Control Policy for Sports Storage Room
Council approved the Access Control Policy for the Sports Storage Room, which sets procedures to safeguard sports equipment and minimize the risk of loss, theft, or misuse. The policy outlines the processes and responsibilities for managing access to the storage room in the Field House.
