Council Meeting Highlights July 23

Peace Regional Mental Health Task Force
Deputy Mayor Stacey Messner gave Council an update on the Peace Regional Mental Health Task Force. The task force works to identify regional priorities and improve access to mental health and addiction supports in rural communities. Council voted to continue Grimshaw’s membership. One of the key successes of the committee is Resolution B4 – Rural Access to Supports for Addictions, Homelessness, and Mental Health – presented by Grimshaw Council and passed with over 93% support at the 2023 Alberta Municipalities Convention. The resolution strengthened collaboration among the RCMP, municipalities and key service agencies in the region.

Ken Sargent House Funding and Letter of Support
Council approved a financial donation and reviewed a letter of support for the Ken Sargent House grant application. Located beside the Grande Prairie Hospital, the Ken Sargent House will provide affordable, supportive accommodations for individuals and families traveling to the city for medical care. Completion is expected in late fall or early winter of 2026. Council voted in favour of a financial contribution of $ 2,601, representing support on behalf of every resident of Grimshaw.

Alberta Municipalities Conference
Council discussed the Alberta Municipalities Conference and Trade Show, scheduled for November 12–14, 2025, in Calgary, and approved a motion for five representatives to attend. As this is an election year, Council emphasized the importance of having new councillors participate. The convention offers valuable learning and networking opportunities in municipal governance. Council also approved sending one councillor to the Rural Municipalities of Alberta Fall Convention in Edmonton, November 17 to 20, 2025, to support continued engagement on rural municipal issues.

CAO Salary Grid
Finance Director Larissa Hempler presented information to Council regarding CAO salaries from municipalities of similar size and structure across Alberta. This information is being considered as part of the ongoing recruitment process for a new Chief Administrative Officer. The full job description is accessible on the Town of Grimshaw website at grimshaw.ca/careers.

Staff Policy Amendment
Council reviewed proposed changes to the Town of Grimshaw Staff Policy regarding overtime pay and directed Administration to provide the financial impact of the proposed changes for Council’s review at an upcoming Council meeting.

The next Town of Grimshaw Council meeting will be held at 7 pm on August 27, 2025.
