Staff & Council participate in "Tough Enough To Talk About It' Program

January 28, 2025 – The Town of Grimshaw is proud to participate in the "Tough Enough to Talk About It" mental health program, hosted by the Resource Centre for Suicide Prevention North Peace Branch. This important initiative will take place on January 29, 2025, with a morning session for Town of Grimshaw staff and a public session in the afternoon.

"'Tough Enough to Talk About It' is a mental health literacy program designed specifically for individuals working in trades, industry, and agriculture,” says Casey Szmata, North Peace Coordinator for the Resource Centre for Suicide Prevention. “The program addresses the unique demands of these sectors and their impact on mental health and well-being.”

A total of twenty-three Town of Grimshaw Public Works and Multiplex staff, as well as three Town of Grimshaw Council members, will attend the morning session.

“We can’t thank Casey Szmata and the Resource Centre for Suicide Prevention enough for bringing this incredible program to our community,” says Wendy Wald, Mayor of the Town of Grimshaw. “Mental health affects us all, and having our staff and council participate is very important. It shows that we care and are here to support one another.”

The program is facilitated by Tracy Golnick, the Men’s Mental Health Director from Grande Prairie. The sessions provide practical strategies for creating safer workplaces and reducing the stigma surrounding mental health. Golnick brings years of experience and expertise in suicide awareness and prevention.

"The Town of Grimshaw has been incredibly supportive of our office and initiatives," says Szmata. "With several recent tragedies in our community, it is crucial to provide opportunities like this to educate and empower people to recognize signs of declining mental health and learn how to respond effectively. Men, in particular, often face barriers when discussing mental health and emotions. 'Tough Enough to Talk About It' aims to create a safe and approachable space for these conversations, reducing stigma and fostering connection.”

The free presentation will take place at the Resource Centre for Suicide Prevention North Branch in Grimshaw at 1:00 PM and is open to all community members. For more information about the program or to register for the public session, please contact the Resource Centre for Suicide Prevention North Branch at (825) 238-0038.
